Northern Thailand

We spent a great weekend in northern Thailand.  We left bright and early on Saturday morning, 5:00 to be exact, and drove about 200 Km (I think) to reach the Golden Triangle region.  This is where Thailand, Myanmar (Burma) and Laos share borders.  It is a mountainous region with a history of opium trafficking.  Now it is a historically significant tourist destination.  We traveled on the Mekong River toward Myanmar, then went back down river and were able to go ashore in Laos (pronounce Lao).  This area of Laos is pretty poor, hosting touristy markets and many begging children.  Being in this area evoked the same feelings that I had as a child when visiting Civil War battlefields.  It was pretty impressive.  After that we traveled to the city of Mae Sai on the Myanmar border.  This is the first city where we got to spend some time in what I would say was a night market geared towards the natives and not tourists.  It was huge, lively and had just about anything you might want to buy there.
