On the way we stopped at a Technology Mall. OMG. It was electronic heaven. Four floors jam packed with shops selling everything imaginable for fulfilling your electronic needs (or shoud I say wants), all at rock bottom prices (almost as good as Ebay). It's a good thing that I have no room left in my luggage for anything more, it was very tempting.<br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307392233734055346" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhhvlTWVTBVKDi3lydlZqJYqHNB46zNnuNJlbl-cS0YReZjyeOa1kasel6OoSPoxW9mXxghWeh98QrtLSu3I6IjKTurztxmhRnpY3zFxMm9iKKzPlei_rkxuIdqYKT9ExmSD47GeClr9gsx/s200/DSC00816.JPG" border="0" /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5307392235616980498" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht4TH1XtPR8BDaPGIZ8aNyWPNm-627-0PFCNhjHUJTeuSxufnLHrc6uqHvJfVRQkCuSYvLOX6p6gNXSo-5N_8bQhQW1cAZ5uAT4gEx7xB96-cQO-_h4TLZIa0eOVzXu4mEXYw8Sx-vGunb/s200/DSC00818.JPG" border="0" /><br /><div>In the evening we attended a tradional Thai puppet play. We arrive at 8:20 for an 8:30 departure only to find that our train would be 2 hours late. Not only that, but we find out that it is not an air conditioned train (remember that the temps are in the upper 30's C). So Ceasar quickly dashed to the bus station to inquire about a bus to Bangkok. We were in luck. A bus (air conditioned) was leaving at 9:00. So we cashed in our tickets, loaded up the cars and rushed to the bus station, arriving just in time.<br />As Mr. Chusak is so fond of saying "Wait 5 minutes and our plans will change". You really have to be flexible here.<br />Everyone said a teary good bye and we pulled out of the bus station at 9:07. Of course everyone stayed to the bitter end to wave good bye as we were pulling out of the station. I don't know who is teaching their classes, all 8 are teachers and Tawin and company had at least an hour or more drive back to school. I guess flexible means flexible.<br />We arrived in Bangkok around 4:00. I forgot how noisy it is here. You can't have a conversation walking down the street. We will be here for two days and leave early Saturday morning.Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17427531246837950661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2123364307658027973.post-29601905425538006422009-02-23T19:41:00.000-08:002009-02-24T08:50:03.669-08:00Last day in Si SatchanalaiToday is our last day in Si <span class="blsp-spelling-error" id="SPELLING_ERROR_0">Satchanalai</span>. I gave a farewell speech to the students and teachers at the morning assembly. It was very sad. <div><div><div>We will be leaving for Bangkok at 8:30 in the morning by train. Another long day of traveling.</div><div> </div><div>Ratree and family gave a great farewell party for all of us tonight. Fortunately, Russ did recover enough to attend. We ate more great Thai food, watched slide shows of our trip,( I think between everyone here we must have about a million pictures), and had one last night of karaoke. We were presented with some farewell gifts, everyone gave speechs, and maybe a few tears were shed. It was a great time.<img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306405366250665618" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhfscMX90iSH4OwxDCpbqln1O1El5PxLsu0Lae0TYH2-oDeI22bEkfRvDC2GhqhJQTA52otKGzYzQhBmcHOxcm6OTB1QCe0MNk4wLtPbkq9vZySr5AGNNuhZr8sHSBxAXs2utbmNgtC-EsI/s200/DSC00802.JPG" border="0" /></div><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306405365225272450" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjsj39R9Xe020w1pUHvBVjaX3MTAm20_5cLeJFcATNKcDFfA_YyO_PD8q0eaDt69GhecWmp3MY5XZtjKmRMQugwo4RtxL9BIC1iRn_aSSJOxcwrU31UoHqGIOQHjUShYYZRURn1p-uSTj_q/s200/DSC00807.JPG" border="0" /><br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306405368084756514" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjx5r2U7AIxogN7ufSdcsp0FredQMwjW2p677zaXWQN7cq4922eoRu2EGU6r8EPDPNndk1f5wcXf5cmfRKZyTNISNwYIruHXfgX92UbWReGZbbooLjm0LZ_p3imKYtB-mFNqA9TsDmB_HYI/s200/DSC00809.JPG" border="0" />I am excited to return to the States and share everything that I have learned here in Thailand. I think many people in the United States think of Thailand as a 3rd world country, but after being here for three weeks I have <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_1">learned</span> that that is definitely not true. In some <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_2">ways</span> it is a more simple lifestyle. Farms are family farms and many people make their living by selling fresh produce and meat at the open air markets. But that only means that the food you get is very fresh and locally grown, and I am sure not loaded with pesticides/herbicides. The cost of living is much less than in the United States, with many things costing a third to a fourth of what they might cost in the States. But it is a very <span class="blsp-spelling-corrected" id="SPELLING_ERROR_3">technologically</span> advanced society. Computers and cell phones are everywhere. Their highway system is very good (and we travelled many of them!!). They take great pride in their cars, in fact they make jokes about "old" cars like we make jokes about dirty cars ("wash me"). The teachers are highly trained. They must complete a 5 year undergraduate program and one year of practice training before they can teach. Their schools may look different, but the school sytems are quite rigorous. They do track students here, with each grade level divided into 5 or 6 levels, depending on ability. Only those students in the upper levels will go on to college. From what I heard, there is an extensive university system, with many branches located around the country. There are also many vocational opportunities for both high school age students as well as post high school. I have been very impressed with what I have seen and learned. It is also a very beautiful country. I feel very lucky to have seen as much of the country as we have in the short time that we have been here.</div></div>Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17427531246837950661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2123364307658027973.post-19075365251885251082009-02-23T19:27:00.000-08:002009-02-23T23:18:17.015-08:00Monday<div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfHLlT6IMHsbXw_0noDb5bJU2QtUmGm4GQlQQEiLva3DuZ1XEURRgfrLkjIeqrscVJrrZJuv7HmmZGWzIXn-3afzMEucdK1w2NVp2L0pQCWbv5tv6jrFHy-GNy8YUxr-ixmoGje0LwTd2B/s1600-h/DSC00795.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306257788010783906" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 150px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjfHLlT6IMHsbXw_0noDb5bJU2QtUmGm4GQlQQEiLva3DuZ1XEURRgfrLkjIeqrscVJrrZJuv7HmmZGWzIXn-3afzMEucdK1w2NVp2L0pQCWbv5tv6jrFHy-GNy8YUxr-ixmoGje0LwTd2B/s200/DSC00795.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiBcfsM0T1whpJgZ9wOxK2cp0kW7YZBoBUUlR7iGQzn94tkrp_eKrEaFMupicFa67EHXetIVj5QeWUrNkqIB-s2nMlJyq7HpRv4D5-dbFnOqUyjzWlishugUk4IstxytAMU5XL8MIB1pK0/s1600-h/DSC00782.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306257786349903458" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 150px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjiBcfsM0T1whpJgZ9wOxK2cp0kW7YZBoBUUlR7iGQzn94tkrp_eKrEaFMupicFa67EHXetIVj5QeWUrNkqIB-s2nMlJyq7HpRv4D5-dbFnOqUyjzWlishugUk4IstxytAMU5XL8MIB1pK0/s200/DSC00782.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3jsKSKEvOVjQ3CTkaxIE1FWY2zrXA14TBAe1TjjO7UUhv56SsALmvV_dHlPKmXkYI1X-UTw2OjvMKuvGK9jyRxOEqzxctf4HnTqld7-5Me12FVIwDg_JeBof9WsMzhz6HHqgVXPOAOHOk/s1600-h/DSC00764.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306257778845315330" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 150px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 200px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg3jsKSKEvOVjQ3CTkaxIE1FWY2zrXA14TBAe1TjjO7UUhv56SsALmvV_dHlPKmXkYI1X-UTw2OjvMKuvGK9jyRxOEqzxctf4HnTqld7-5Me12FVIwDg_JeBof9WsMzhz6HHqgVXPOAOHOk/s200/DSC00764.JPG" border="0" /></a> Today was our last teaching day at Muangchaliang school. It has been very fun sharing our country with the students. In the afternoon Russ and I were dressed up in traditional Thai and Japanese costumes. What fun. At the end of the day we were treated to a performance by the Thai students in their Traditional Thai music group. They voluntarily participate in learning the traditional instruments and singing. It was amazing to hear. I can't wait to share this with teachers in Superior. Fortunately I had my video camera with me.<br /><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306257793083842770" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDR__ghfUcxBuphLe8FQ9gPu6tGrpSM8OhHXvPWZbwj4IsZpbGov2Lzvj4pyKz6Tkdc9F_yE6fBLK8EtnFfEmE0vMS3D-739teeFGd9iJ9jwd5Dm8Ax2vZ5czRKLbOJeeCuYjTRzyzp4N6/s200/DSC00800.JPG" border="0" />In the evening the director (principal) of the school hosted a dinner in our honor. Unfortunately Russ had to miss it because he suffered from heat stroke. I think it got up to 38 C today, their hot season is approaching. Russ actually ended up in the emergency room last night. He's better today, but pretty weak. Emergency room visits in Thailand, 100 baht. That is less than $3.00. Wow!!</div></div></div>Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17427531246837950661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2123364307658027973.post-50307012926028387322009-02-22T07:53:00.000-08:002009-02-23T22:54:17.650-08:00Displaced people of Myanmar<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJTkQvUDMvBtXRp_DOZk9tS7sV7U2Pko0RBBAMe-Ui__su61YmsNVzngEJCX1TtNCCbePi8olgnyMZfdZIXh7ug7ejzsTi7UouFrKkkCWBep03SD9hZkJsH1ByyM8-sw80tNPdeufIZJnh/s1600-h/Refugee3.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306249044800793426" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 134px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJTkQvUDMvBtXRp_DOZk9tS7sV7U2Pko0RBBAMe-Ui__su61YmsNVzngEJCX1TtNCCbePi8olgnyMZfdZIXh7ug7ejzsTi7UouFrKkkCWBep03SD9hZkJsH1ByyM8-sw80tNPdeufIZJnh/s200/Refugee3.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAKvApY1OY-OaJ2gkxo2VrQUMOJimys0-jZd_uf-zaOCeHCPWN5XGPx8BVnemBXm7u55jFBfdOR9aC0Altd2XHGAR0XQy8_rvCvzaGNA45fAYsDwUzq0MxxTiHESJ4-NQwZ5EjUvQVv4XX/s1600-h/Refugee2.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306249042798865442" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 134px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgAKvApY1OY-OaJ2gkxo2VrQUMOJimys0-jZd_uf-zaOCeHCPWN5XGPx8BVnemBXm7u55jFBfdOR9aC0Altd2XHGAR0XQy8_rvCvzaGNA45fAYsDwUzq0MxxTiHESJ4-NQwZ5EjUvQVv4XX/s200/Refugee2.jpg" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGo8Wi4jcnKDRt6PoRXl3glna8akIKkfwA4OHHRSDPefGLocPvAyl0LDOPHi5_QxXvN18lWFFcGbLNqb10ekvV_tC1gcHhSenAmLIcfwmOj5ZfkLB3HNDleIJgFP6TTrdS7gOmfW4uegBx/s1600-h/Refugee1.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5306249041563526802" style="DISPLAY: block; MARGIN: 0px auto 10px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 134px; TEXT-ALIGN: center" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGo8Wi4jcnKDRt6PoRXl3glna8akIKkfwA4OHHRSDPefGLocPvAyl0LDOPHi5_QxXvN18lWFFcGbLNqb10ekvV_tC1gcHhSenAmLIcfwmOj5ZfkLB3HNDleIJgFP6TTrdS7gOmfW4uegBx/s200/Refugee1.jpg" border="0" /></a> I would be remiss if I did not speak of the Karen people of Myanmar that we encountered on our weekend journey. The Myanmar government has decided to eradicate the Karen tribes of Myanmar. As a result, many have fled to Thailand and are living in refugee camps. Some have been there for as long as 15 years. We drove by one of the camps. About 10-15000 people live there. The housing is substandard, crowded and they rely on the Thai government for assistance. I don't know a lot of the details surrounding their plight, but I intend on finding out more, and also finding out what we can do to assist them. The school has grades 7-12 and all students start the day at an all school assembly at 8:00. All sit outside for the flag raising and sing the national anthem and school song. After that there are announcements. Somedays awards are given. Sometimes discipline is given. Sometimes some of the students stay and do exercises. All students wear school uniforms. On Monday, teachers wear uniforms.<br />The school consists of many buildings, so student travel between buildings for different classes. Class sizes range from 40-45 students.</div><div>We did presentations to four classes per day Tuesday-Friday and will be again on Monday. The older students understand English fairly well, but some of the younger students have that deer in the headlights look. They enjoy the pictures though, especially the ones about winter.</div></div></div>Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17427531246837950661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2123364307658027973.post-87632358406170281002009-02-19T17:33:00.000-08:002009-02-19T17:36:43.900-08:00Teaching this weekI have been having internet problems this week, so it seems this might be the only way to connect with people. <br />We have been busy in the classrooms this week, teaching 4 classes every morning, then off for more adventures in the afternoon.<br />We are heading up north again this afternoon to visit more of this beautiful country. We started the day of touring at the Sukothai College of Fine Arts (in Sukothai of course). This institution attracts students from all over Thailand to study the traditional Thai arts. It encompasses grade 7 through bachelors degree.</div><br /><div>From there we traveled to Sukothai Historical Park where we visited both the Sukothai National museum and the ruins in the park. Sukothai, which means "the dawn of happiness" was the location of the first capital of Thailand and prospered at the same time as Sisatchanalai, over 700 years ago. The museum contained many artifacts from that era from Sukothai, Sisatchanalai and ancient pottery from Sanakhalok. Of course no pictures were allowed in the museum. Sukothai, besides being the first capital of Thailand under King Rankhanghaeng, was the birthplace of the Thai alphabet and housed expansive temples.</div><br /><div>We finished our touring at Jaeram national park where we got to experience the fruit bat exodus from the caves in the evening. I have seen things like this in documentaries, but to see it first hand was awesome. At least a million or so bats swarming out of the caves for over 10 minutes. It was amazing.</div><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiDYjgK_ualLRSyntjcVJluR4vSRf7j4bQjsUao2YhKz3gawQMzMzG_sSALqbYpnOguNSjEaHMO-u_Vi1HHNBzn02wPQsUhlrPYBCVq7ChpEqBE7vQ67bpUqPCvvCG6LuEwkmRa-vFIHEuw/s200/DSC00709.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303792326233437474" /><div>Of course the evening wouldn't be complete without more great food and karaoke.</div><div><img style="display:block; This morning we walked through their morning market where there was an incredible array of every kind of fresh food; vegetables, fruit, meat, baby turtles, eels, and fish (all alive). What a sensory delight. They even sell tiny birds in cages that people buy to set free for good luck and good health. Truly a foreign experience that I could get used to.</div><div>After breakfast we traveled to Chiang Mai where we toured the King's Project for a Sufficiency Economy. I'm going to have to do some research on this. I don't know if this means self sufficiency or sustainablility or what. I got the impression that it is a national program for research and teaching. The focus is on forestry, agriculture, fisheries, and organic farming as well as a preserve of native animals and birds. Very impressive.</div><div>Ratree spent a lot of time during the drive teaching me the Thai language. It is frustratingly hard. My mouth doesn't want to do what it's supposed to.</div><div>And since we spent a great deal of time on the road I have to mention the driving. It's wild. There doesn't appear to be any speed limits, so the only thing slowing you down is the treachorous (sp?) turns in the mountains. When you approach a town there will be a sign posted to reduce speed, but not by how much. So we flew through the towns. People will pass other cars wherever. There are lines for passing and no passing, but it doesn't seem to mean much. I think that people passing just assume that others will move over if they have to. It seems to work. And all the time the motor bikes travel merrily along the shoulder of the highway. Sometimes I can't watch. I'm glad I don't have to drive. </div>Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17427531246837950661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2123364307658027973.post-1469116658514219872009-02-15T07:04:00.000-08:002009-02-15T07:24:05.099-08:00Sisatchanalai Historical Park<a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE9APHmZ3jrx1o5etsV4EysurgiEIuhCVD0Mz1lIkPHp5BA-vdJ0cSZ7Jq62-UwVbEwPa8NKmGsoQrm3lzTRjIi-4hoP867lt7cAyvBzI71Ttn0d6lPgPJUqDi5HLmqiSt1GTInd6nll-P/s1600-h/DSC00636.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgE9APHmZ3jrx1o5etsV4EysurgiEIuhCVD0Mz1lIkPHp5BA-vdJ0cSZ7Jq62-UwVbEwPa8NKmGsoQrm3lzTRjIi-4hoP867lt7cAyvBzI71Ttn0d6lPgPJUqDi5HLmqiSt1GTInd6nll-P/s200/DSC00636.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303045132981093474" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7CmmXnfth5Q6mtiZbktE9_izZeEpUGDSAXTV7jC3MI6kM5hbeyCqAy2nSAOeW0wUPcZm7PTkjwkpHlRchbA02jMsSOqTJpgU-SEeSg5CQ3Z3A0x3RXQh4bDwZ707qgT6FIlNyehSidkHg/s1600-h/DSC00626.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi7CmmXnfth5Q6mtiZbktE9_izZeEpUGDSAXTV7jC3MI6kM5hbeyCqAy2nSAOeW0wUPcZm7PTkjwkpHlRchbA02jMsSOqTJpgU-SEeSg5CQ3Z3A0x3RXQh4bDwZ707qgT6FIlNyehSidkHg/s200/DSC00626.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303045124622086338" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg-2jsq8fwaYqwvA45_CYujUqedckp1o_U5OWqwO6HVPMv_lNgtifySQfhaXQ10v0xLe3HHZRxvKoDcmpDbOJsFevUYeKuKcUAc0bj9xlzBP7aLNmYpnrtX7D80hB5YzZGeDqFxByy13BM/s1600-h/DSC00624.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjg-2jsq8fwaYqwvA45_CYujUqedckp1o_U5OWqwO6HVPMv_lNgtifySQfhaXQ10v0xLe3HHZRxvKoDcmpDbOJsFevUYeKuKcUAc0bj9xlzBP7aLNmYpnrtX7D80hB5YzZGeDqFxByy13BM/s200/DSC00624.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303045123632705154" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc-xga56gxwmHKFNG9Bk1oBq0PGrl1bgi1DuLUb3WK-WJr_p1M-F3T1kHcsptg2HmdKk3aeQd6Dtb7gLwR5X4aCK3ErrLd-6PjYdZ90pl9Dpx4VQtTgzlcxWSHGkKZpmKzdIhb7WnCH-jN/s1600-h/DSC00616.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjc-xga56gxwmHKFNG9Bk1oBq0PGrl1bgi1DuLUb3WK-WJr_p1M-F3T1kHcsptg2HmdKk3aeQd6Dtb7gLwR5X4aCK3ErrLd-6PjYdZ90pl9Dpx4VQtTgzlcxWSHGkKZpmKzdIhb7WnCH-jN/s200/DSC00616.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303045113472344050" /></a><br /><a onblur="try {parent.deselectBloggerImageGracefully();} catch(e) {}" href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKdFm0kUIaUvOjxVQiQZ8cp-0hB1z_nUZs8YbP2kcQia_1uVitf8lzkOC3FfXgKQ_RUeYyzCA-CNbbqA1W4c8Xz7fwkkgaFwoGmSC9WgaFpZyKSRyaBaGeC_H7a1MWOH6lkCbAkeE-w8yO/s1600-h/DSC00614.JPG"><img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 200px; height: 150px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKdFm0kUIaUvOjxVQiQZ8cp-0hB1z_nUZs8YbP2kcQia_1uVitf8lzkOC3FfXgKQ_RUeYyzCA-CNbbqA1W4c8Xz7fwkkgaFwoGmSC9WgaFpZyKSRyaBaGeC_H7a1MWOH6lkCbAkeE-w8yO/s200/DSC00614.JPG" border="0" alt="" id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5303045112980745538" /></a><br />Besides the spectacular ruins and artifacts, the best part of this historical park was the absence of tourists. This expansive park contains some impressive ruins over 700 years old. We left bright and early on Saturday morning, 5:00 to be exact, and drove about 200 Km (I think) to reach the Golden Triangle region. This is where Thailand, Myanmar (Burma) and Laos share borders. It is a mountainous region with a history of opium trafficking. Now it is a historically significant tourist destination. We traveled on the Mekong River toward Myanmar, then went back down river and were able to go ashore in Laos (pronounce Lao). This area of Laos is pretty poor, hosting touristy markets and many begging children. Being in this area evoked the same feelings that I had as a child when visiting Civil War battlefields. It was pretty impressive. After that we traveled to the city of Mae Sai on the Myanmar border. This is the first city where we got to spend some time in what I would say was a night market geared towards the natives and not tourists. It was huge, lively and had just about anything you might want to buy there. These pictures are from our tour of Sawananan Wittaya school. Notice Chem students that not only do Thai chemistry students need to learn the names of compounds, they have to learn english notation for the chemicals!! One of the teachers there told me that often times they have to learn english first in order to learn about chemistry. And you thought you had it tough.. They also have an ag program and grow many crops and ornamentals in green houses (shaded?) and gardens.</div><div>Russ Nelson and Fred Schlichting from Solon Springs who are traveling with me also have a blog about our trip. We have created a link to their site if you want to view their blog. Just find Mr. Nelson under followers and his blog is listed there. </div><div></div></div></div></div></div>Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17427531246837950661noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2123364307658027973.post-62839438607554987202009-02-12T06:33:00.000-08:002009-02-12T06:54:17.550-08:00Si SatchanalaiI feel like royalty. Everyone is so gracious here. Thailand is called the Land of the Smiling people. It's true. But not only are they always smiling, their smiles come from their soul. They are truly happy, welcoming people.<div>We were treated to a wonderful Thai meal last night after which everyone sang karaoke. I think that karaoke is the national past time. And yes, we sang too.</div><div>After dinner and song, Fred, Russ and I went our separate ways with each of our hosts. Ratree and her husband Jamerla (P'Air) have opened their home (and hearts) to me. I feel so at home. Their daughter Somrathai (Jan) lives with them also.</div><div>Today was spent at two of the schools. We visited Ratree and Mr. Chusak's school Muangchaliang in the morning, where we met with the department heads and then ate a great lunch (have I mentioned how good the Thai food is). After that we traveled to Tawin's school, Sawananan Wittaya for a tour of their beautiful facility. Tawin and his wife then had everyone over for dinner (yes, eating more good food again) and guess what...more karaoke!! Maybe by the time I return to the states I'll be able to sing. </div><div>Hopefully I will have pictures tomorrow, still working on how to hook up to their computers. <br /></div>Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17427531246837950661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2123364307658027973.post-53930145688415246072009-02-11T18:58:00.000-08:002009-02-12T19:08:02.688-08:00SwankhalokWe spent all day on the train today traveling from Bangkok to Swankhalok. We thought we'd have to get out and push the train a couple of times. It seemed to stop at random places in the middle of nowhere, then rev up and finally get going.<br />I don't have any pictures yet, I have to find a way to connect to these computers. This is the former royal residence (until Rama V built theVimanmek Mansion in Dusit Palace Park). The buildings are mindboggling, but the highlight of the Palace area is Wat Phra Kaew, which houses the Emerald Buddha, one of the most revered of Thailands Buddhas. I couldn't take a picture of the Emerald Buddha because cameras are not allowed in the temple.</div></div></div></div></div></div>Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17427531246837950661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2123364307658027973.post-56247039835979234062009-02-10T02:24:00.000-08:002009-02-12T19:12:13.491-08:00Another day in Bangkok<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEir8KeOPmEAjpDRi0HZChQwzQaLYJNEQvb6tbFf5Pd_dz7VL2JZstVhuOslOgR0Z7FY_wxVWYUtwkEQL7spBsROMW_EbYimtWP2bcO0tivJeyavNjP4wF5kNwx1qBjjD8QEakE4KBia8xxY/s1600-h/DSC00566.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301122455056940162" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEir8KeOPmEAjpDRi0HZChQwzQaLYJNEQvb6tbFf5Pd_dz7VL2JZstVhuOslOgR0Z7FY_wxVWYUtwkEQL7spBsROMW_EbYimtWP2bcO0tivJeyavNjP4wF5kNwx1qBjjD8QEakE4KBia8xxY/s200/DSC00566.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwrRj0T593Tsmc7OfHlLH3Kqz7FW2y82cg0IxXB-I6wrF7dMlAthIn_bF4FH5qX0WBu3q7sPkDFgXtNk4rBs9j8WqDltv4xCL24TFYOZOH6c1JCF9hbOL184gjYe8tzJJfHuRkrEEH1KH5/s1600-h/DSC00572.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301122459377933186" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 149px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiwrRj0T593Tsmc7OfHlLH3Kqz7FW2y82cg0IxXB-I6wrF7dMlAthIn_bF4FH5qX0WBu3q7sPkDFgXtNk4rBs9j8WqDltv4xCL24TFYOZOH6c1JCF9hbOL184gjYe8tzJJfHuRkrEEH1KH5/s200/DSC00572.JPG" border="0" /></a><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0HcbeRG1LwiXKFLOY2s4zV69fTyEtD7qKRDFfhW-YWH68TBLxieArvb0xcbps7DnsPd6Imf0ms8i5OKf8yR1k0PUbaUj0HMIB5bNQLYCRFrpi4LwEaUC5dfKz0jnzFQDOeZVwedHH2ZkK/s1600-h/DSC00575.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301122459890504674" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi0HcbeRG1LwiXKFLOY2s4zV69fTyEtD7qKRDFfhW-YWH68TBLxieArvb0xcbps7DnsPd6Imf0ms8i5OKf8yR1k0PUbaUj0HMIB5bNQLYCRFrpi4LwEaUC5dfKz0jnzFQDOeZVwedHH2ZkK/s200/DSC00575.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><br /><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZhRijbKL3jZz6C6c02jYzvXvGThDIQ4W1J21jj5QSuDH2UO5EGPSoSoh_OYdQ6DirAqOuHc3Yop5equ-RHLblzIZ_luLTaWjZiDsdu-3BPaZcnrUANNDXrsgTQmP216Ev4cw8NcslQrmp/s1600-h/DSC00573.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5301122453337006930" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 200px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 150px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgZhRijbKL3jZz6C6c02jYzvXvGThDIQ4W1J21jj5QSuDH2UO5EGPSoSoh_OYdQ6DirAqOuHc3Yop5equ-RHLblzIZ_luLTaWjZiDsdu-3BPaZcnrUANNDXrsgTQmP216Ev4cw8NcslQrmp/s200/DSC00573.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><br /><div>This city is beginning to grow on me. The noise, the incredible number of sidewalk shops and restaurants. At night when they close up the shops, sidewalk vendors and restaraunts move in. The smells are incredible. I don't think anyone in Bangkok cooks at home. It is such a vibrant city.<br />We continued our whirlwind tour of Bangkok's attractions today. We started by taking the sky train to the Chao Phraya river to take a water taxi to visit some temples. The river is crowded with commuters, all taking the boats to get to work.</div><div>We visited Wat Arun or The Temple of Dawn first. It is a phenomenal pagoda, at least 200 ft high, constructed of concrete and covered with mosaics made from the captured Chinese vessels that used broken pottery as ballast, so all of the mosaics are made of Chinese pottery. Incredible.</div><div>From there we crossed back over the river to Wat Pho, the country's largest temple. It is also where you will find the famous reclining Buddha. Enormous. Pretty spectacular.</div><div>We then moved on to the Grand Palace. I will have to dedicate a post just to this so I can show all of the pictures.</div><div>Our last stop was the Vimanmek Mansion, built by King Rama V as his residence. It is a 72 room mansion built of golden teakwood. In the early days, the canal system was the major mode of travel in the area, so many of the houses and shops were located on the canals. There were also floating markets.<br />After that we went to the elephant park and zoo where we got to ride the elephants. I was really bummed that they wouldn't let me take one out on my own. It's a good thing they can't survive up north or I would want one of my own.<br />We then traveled to the Thai cultural center where we got to see how silk is processed from the silkworm to fabric. Pretty cool. They also put on a great show depicting many of the traditions of Thailand.</div><div>I decided to display my pictures a bit smaller. They take up a bit too much space when I have more than one. </div></div></div></div>Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17427531246837950661noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2123364307658027973.post-65594030782195096452009-02-09T02:19:00.000-08:002009-02-09T03:38:58.417-08:00Finally in Thailand<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM6MNSqA0Yhn8BK_YOen3sSukC85qCBWve9Bhn_M_2dQ1XmK3d0FCYcd4BBp9dLF6UiP1V2n8eJrSNvEQY2GGuzmOoUD2GolsxH8Gg-5iuSBSbKOwduLb7LhTl8B4smKqKpx0HYg4aCldF/s1600-h/DSC00533.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300748169112095250" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjM6MNSqA0Yhn8BK_YOen3sSukC85qCBWve9Bhn_M_2dQ1XmK3d0FCYcd4BBp9dLF6UiP1V2n8eJrSNvEQY2GGuzmOoUD2GolsxH8Gg-5iuSBSbKOwduLb7LhTl8B4smKqKpx0HYg4aCldF/s320/DSC00533.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVMNdr977fWQ3-9TA1pjACRKkhtbe9EmMTKdLf5aKwIjyWHdRxxd5OFJu_-EFSOjPvaOzGId2TXB1GGB547sJxV3iUxAcSt6c7fxQlr7kUui727e627eZ3SbWCBxsOMZzQIpayKWH2-V9L/s1600-h/DSC00537.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300748179905588882" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhVMNdr977fWQ3-9TA1pjACRKkhtbe9EmMTKdLf5aKwIjyWHdRxxd5OFJu_-EFSOjPvaOzGId2TXB1GGB547sJxV3iUxAcSt6c7fxQlr7kUui727e627eZ3SbWCBxsOMZzQIpayKWH2-V9L/s320/DSC00537.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><div><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhch8SoDJwmRpOZOZIz41Qe05tpj1cpGoASUWZm1ysNsNFUVfmnGYPs17XTZil6UEzFQyuCW7bUaHri-IsHkLgYAVTTKYjGswJCeNkycnr0PDG30mqEa3C7poAgvMDBo5QKTMjsQZLzopuo/s1600-h/DSC00535.JPG"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5300748173648038930" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 320px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 240px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhch8SoDJwmRpOZOZIz41Qe05tpj1cpGoASUWZm1ysNsNFUVfmnGYPs17XTZil6UEzFQyuCW7bUaHri-IsHkLgYAVTTKYjGswJCeNkycnr0PDG30mqEa3C7poAgvMDBo5QKTMjsQZLzopuo/s320/DSC00535.JPG" border="0" /></a><br /><br /><br /><div>Our adventure started early. Our plane from Tokyo to Thailand broke, so we had to spend the night in Tokyo and fly out in the morning. The up side of this is that we got to meet a lot of really nice people. Funny how people start talking to each other when they're all in a fix together. Also, getting some sleep that night helped so we didn't have any jet lag once we got here.<br /></div><div>Fred has had our days packed since we arrived. Bangkok is an extremely large, crowded and noisy place. I guess 10 million people helps. We visited the home of Jim Thompson, an American who settled here after WWII. He was a key player in developiung the silk business here in Thailand. His home is on one of the many canals that run through the city, and has many artifacts and wonderful pieces of art.</div><div></div><div></div><div>After that we traveled on one of the boat taxis to visit some temples. One of them is a built up cheidi, the golden mountain, where people come to pray to Buddha. It is the highest point in Bangkok. </div><br /><div>We then traveled on Bangkok's sky rail and subway to a night market where we ate some great Thai food and browsed the shops.</div><br /><br /><br /><div></div><br /><br /><br /><div></div></div></div>Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17427531246837950661noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2123364307658027973.post-22807609633627915702009-01-25T13:29:00.000-08:002009-01-27T06:48:25.260-08:00Superior, WI<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyY3uLzCbHrs181Y1_S_eGbcbQkRZgzvJrGKNkUUGZx539Cm4lZanD8ppyccTAqUWM6ReY8Y76sKFFZMdmb51bNIf38fgaCWd9A8K9DNfAGcjlKLcyC8kDQ7KBQgeQeTLaOPZRkS8yZ-m3/s1600-h/thailand_map_855.jpg"><img id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5295348495945818370" style="FLOAT: left; MARGIN: 0px 10px 10px 0px; WIDTH: 254px; CURSOR: hand; HEIGHT: 320px" alt="" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjyY3uLzCbHrs181Y1_S_eGbcbQkRZgzvJrGKNkUUGZx539Cm4lZanD8ppyccTAqUWM6ReY8Y76sKFFZMdmb51bNIf38fgaCWd9A8K9DNfAGcjlKLcyC8kDQ7KBQgeQeTLaOPZRkS8yZ-m3/s320/thailand_map_855.jpg" border="0" /></a> I am in the final stages of preparing for my trip to Thailand. I will be traveling with two other educators from Solon Springs WI. We are leaving the States on February 6. We will begin the trip by spending a few days in Bangkok, and then traveling to the Sukhothai Province located in the northwest part of Thailand. We will be staying at two towns there, first at Si Satchanalai, a small town of about 15,000 located in the farming region. Si Satchanalai is known for their pottery, silks and historic parks and national parks. From there we will travel to Ban Mai, a much smaller village. While there we will be visiting and speaking in their high schools, as well as sight seeing, shopping and last but not least, enjoying some wonderful Thai food. We will end our trip in Bangkok before flying home on February 28.<br /><div></div><br /><div>Please join me on my travels.</div>Judyhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/17427531246837950661noreply@blogger.com0
